Garmin TOPO US 24K Review

Garmin has released their newest TOPO US 24K. This product offers several advantages including routable trails and detailed highway coverage. The DVD and micro-SD format are not locked into a single device, so you can still use them wether you buy a new unit.

Here some of the advantages of Garmin TOPO US 24K:

Garmin TOPO US 24K
have accurate and routable roads. Garmin's 1:100,000 scale topo products utilizing TIGER data for the road, which is almost always off from the actual location of the road. People see their unit and think it's a problem of accuracy of GPS, but it's just way out of place on the map. U.S. Topo 24K maps using more accurate NAVTEQ road data, however, like the Garmin Nuvis. So that's one point in supporting it.

The roads are also routable
. This means that if you have waypoints for the trailhead, you can mount the GPS receiver on your dashboard and get turn-by-turn directions on compatible Garmin handheld. Of course, you will not hear the sound, but you do not need to transfer the waypoints to a second device (such as the Nuvi) just to navigate to the trailhead. Life was just simpler.

Garmin TOPO US 24K have more detailed contour map. This product give you greater detail, with more closely spaced contours. Common in the eastern US 24K maps showing the 40 'contour interval vs. 100' map scale to 100K. However, with many free topos on the GPS File Depot, this just does not rank as an excuse to buy a Garmin product.

One thing that TOPO U.S. 24K trailwise has going for it is the path that routable. But if you load the track new gpx to Garmin handheld., Advanced navigation features to track offers many advantages of routable roads. And because of the way many are missing, this feature is almost useless as it could.

The Micro-SD DVD and TOPO U.S. 24K product is not locked into a single device, allowing you to move the map by handheld Garmin routable from one another (download locked into a single device).  I recommended you buy Garmin TOPO US 24K DVD from Amazon.
